I just think it is not limited to Italians but more so to non fully Americanized cultures. Seems many people from all sorts of regions did it.

I was refering to my wife, we go to dinner at one of her Japanese friends house...and after 3 hours your leaving...but when we go to my relatives house it is a full day affair of eating. Two different cultures worlds appart...

But you are correct many cultures have get togethers for big meals on Sundays, but it seems these days everyong is busy doing something else and it is more likely a family get together will be for a holiday celebration.
