I grew up in a big, Italian family. Sunday dinner was ceremony. Large, elaborate meals, or large simple ones. Lots of red wine and there were often many people there. No one got out of going because they were going to an in-laws dinner or otherwise engaged, all those people were simple invited to come as well.

Now, sadly, I don't see anything close to that.
