Iraq invaded Kuwait in 1991; You should read what they did there. Between all of the people they slaughtered, killed, and looted, they also caused the largest environmental disaster of all time when they set fire to 600+ oil wells that didn't belong to them. I don't know what the current death toll is in Iraq. People look at that number and think it's huge but it's really not; A small amount of US troops did a huge amount of damage. We lost more men in a single day during WWII.

Iraq went into Kuwait because the US was supplying Iraq AND their enemy with weapons and supplies. Neither side was winning though, so Iraq went to Kuwait to borrow more money to get the upper hand and when Kuwait asked to be repaid, Saddam used the money he borrowed and turned it on Kuwait itself.
Yes, it's horrific and yes it was an act of war. But hardly justifies what happens nearly 20 years later. What happened there was the result of a chain of events.
