This war is unlikely to be as easy as some thought. The troops were preparing foe a long drawn out campaign.
They will have to either lay siege, level the place with bombs or attack house to house. None of them a great option.
Siege, a lot of innocent people will die. Saddam does not care if civillians die to save his arse.
Civillians, remember they are the people the coalition are liberating. So option two is a poor one.
Attack house to house, then military might is irrelevant. A lot of US/UK soldiers get killed.
The poloticians were assuming most of the normal army would lay downs it's arms and run to the "liberating" forces smiling. Then the Elite tropps would come out on the battle field so the planes and helicopters could just eliminate them.
Did not reckon on the Iraqi generals mixing the troops, putting those with everything to lose in with those with nothing to lose. A very old tactic.
Bloody enemy, not doing what they are supposed too.
