The magnetic field generated by the Earth is a defense barrier that protects the planet from a variety of dangers. If that field were to shift and take a few years to re-stabilize, it could very well be a potential disaster for the inhabitants of this planet.
At the least, you aren't going to want to stay outside for any extended periods of time. At the worst, charged particles blast into your body and turn you into the Toxic Avenger.
