I run a mainstream dating site and we get people trying to use stolen credit cards on our site all the time. There is a huge cache of easily available stolen credit card numbers out there. When we catch them we refund the card, but sometimes we don't catch them and get hit with the chargeback + the chargeback fees + the possibility of our account being in jeopardy. The credit card companies are totally for the cardholders. The merchants are assumed they are guilty and have to try and prove themselves innocent.
and don't forget sneaky roommates, spouses, children, etc.

while I know a lot of those excuses are bullshit, there are some realities in them as well...
