I would recommend doing some research before jumping into it. A lot of people think blogs will immediately rank in the search engines and when they don't they simply give up. If you browse around the web a bit you can find various articles which will suggest how to optimize your blog for optimal results. Generally when you are just starting out it will take a while to see results (unless you know what you are doing) but as your network grows it will be much easier to see quick results off of new sites.

As far as sponsors go, I think you should start with deciding on a niche or two. Once you decide on the niche you can seek sponsors in that category or it will be easier for us to suggest them to you.
