Hyphens never work. Just go ask met-art.com.

Although this domain has sick traffic...Metart.com (no-hyphen) also redirects to Met-art.com so they are protecting their traffic by having both. Also they have 10 years of name branding...and many webmasters using their progam.
My opinion is a short .com that associates with the website your trying to promote is best, and if .com domain you like is available you should check to see if it was registered in the past and dropped...because most likely it was tested to see if it could generate traffic or not...domainers have $$$ and keep the ones that work. I did hear that many financial comapanys were also invested in domain names as a hedge. So it is possible that some great names might get dropped if they will pick just the super ones to keep due to the financial woes on wall street.
