looks like bad tape to me .. low grade 8 mm tape. keep in mind that they stopped making these camera well over 10 years ago .. and the tae stock was very adhisive ... Dirty tape heads was very common with 8 mm .. they hadn't yet perfected small tape head drums and transports. Hense why the 8 mm was qucikly followed by super8 .. the best camera for this format was the canon L1. kind of the grandfather of the XL1.
I wouldn't expect any better resolution from an 8 mm recording regardless if it was shot last week or last decade. Also analog transfer to digital compression isn't the best, isn't the best, also a low quicktime compression doesn't help matters any...
