They aren't "bad", per se...
Google can, and does, pick words out of a mash of letters. But, you could inadvertently put yourself in search results for words that are useless to your site if Google sees a different word combination than you want, i.e. www.
www.sexexchange.com -- sex exchange vs. sex ex change, etc.
Between hyphen and underscore, use hyphens.

With regards to whether dashes in a url hurts rankings, I have never seen a top ranking url with more than 3 hyphens...I'm sure there are, but going over 2 starts to get spammy, and I now stick to only one.
