There were three primary goals to this campaign.
#1 To take control of the ports in Southern Iraq.
#2 To secure the Southern and Northern oil fields to keep them from being blown, for multiple reasons.
#3 To drive to Baghdad (by passing smaller cities and smaller Iraqi forces) surround it and isolate it.
All three of these goals are being achieved. No one, but no one, with a brain thought that there would not be some pockets of resistence. The outcome of the campaign is known and is inevitable.
