Meth Cave Bust in Kalamazoo
KALAMAZOO - It was a first. Acting on a tip, Kalamazoo Valley Enforcement Team officers raided a man made cave built into a hillside in a wooded area off Charles Street in Kalamazoo.
Officers carefully entered the 10-by-15-foot dugout, watching for booby traps. It had a makeshift roof made from lumber, insulation and tarps, and was littered with the remains of spent meth labs. They also found a chair, a mattress and a gas heater.
Captain Joseph Taylor says it was one of the biggest meth lab operations they had seen, and they have seen some big ones.
"We had one over in comstock, a guy in a garage had 50 or 70 [bottles]. Inside of big bags he had returnable bottles including the two-liter bottles that he was making meth in - he was taking them to the stores to get the dimes back," Taylor said.
KVET is looking for 44-year-old Ronald Craig Jenkins, who was already a wanted for a pair of meth labs discovered last April.
