Now this is interesting question. I have been both in adult and gambling. I will try to point some negative and positive side of both.
1. Geo-targeting:
ADULT: You can promote it to almost all people worldwide. Even some third-world countries have billing solutions that can be used successfully.
GAMBLING: Restrictions to US. After US gambling law come in place (back in 2006), things have became tough for the whole industry. Yes, there are gambling affiliate programs that accept players from US but many of them don?t. And just recently Microgaming software decided to step out from US market. That makes you a less selection of affiliate programs you can choose if you want to promote in US market, but still there are quality ones you can choose and trust.
2. Marketing (PPC)
ADULT: Google Adwords, Yahoo Search Marketing still accept advertising Adult sites. Yes, there are some restrictions, but generally you can get into that segment of advertising.
GAMBLING: No room for PPC Advertising. There are some PPC Search Engines that will accept your gambling related ad, but Google and Yahoo won?t. (except Yahoo UK and some others with restrictions)
The main thing you have to relay if you want to get into the gambling promotion is SEO. And this process needs some times. So, don?t expect things to come quickly if you already don?t have kind a quality traffic which can convert well for gambling affiliate programs.
3. $$$ per Customer
ADULT: Options of Revshare or PPS.
PPS: Usually $25-$50 ($100 or more for Webcams)
Revshare: Usually 50% to 75% (20% or more with Webcams)
GAMBLING: Options Revshare, PPS, or Hybrid Deal (mix of both)
PPS: From $50 to $300
Revshare: From 20% to 45%
Now this part is interesting. All in all, gambling customer should bring you bigger overall profit then adult one. Especially if you are lucky and skilled enough to bring some whale. That can be actually compared with whale in Webcam business. But, on the other side, don?t be surprised if you finish the month where you referred 25 people and your payment is zero! If you choose Revshare option for gambling affiliate program don?t forget that if player wins, your balance is going down. Luckily, there are programs that will reset your balance at the beginning of each month, so if you are in minus you will start new month with clean sheet.
4. Problems with Free content
ADULT: Tube sites . Yeah, you all know about that.
GAMBLING: Well, you can play for free. Yes, there are freerolls and non-deposit bonuses but overall adult have bigger problems with this segment.
