Being that my father is a brown bear guide in Alaska... and having grown up in that environment... i think "hunting" should be separated into two categories.
there is trophy hunting... i.e. shooting a 10' brown bear to nail its hide to your wall and "hunting" for things you intend to eat.
I personally don't care about animals, their alleged "feelings" and have no issues with shooting them and watching them die. However, i have always felt all my life that its totally retarded to spend huge dollars to fly around the world shooting animals for the sole purpose of having a story and trying to get into the record books. I'll kill something i intend to eat or or something that i know will get eaten.
I suspect that if most people grew up like i did surrounded by elephant foot stools, full mounted lions, rhinoceros heads, zebra hides, stuffed lynx, bobcats, elephant tusks, tiger skins etc etc etc etc etc... they wouldn't have such a high opinion of either hunting or hunters... or even guns for that matter.
A sane person wouldn't have to spend too much time around trophy hunters, sitting in their "trophy rooms" looking at tons of dead shit that was killed just for a good story and have to talk to a group of psychotic fucks that thinks its all great and wonderful and can't wait for the next exotic hunt before that person started thinking hunters are idiots.
