He didn't shoot it to feel like a "tough guy". He did it because it's a sport, like fishing. It takes patience, skill (a real target shooting range), and if done with others, creates quality time.
I've never hunted but if one is going to enjoy the hunt and eat the meat and not cause the game to go extinct, go for it. People look at the blood and the carcass of the deer and "feel" for it. This could only happen in modern Western societies where what is on your breakfast table and how it got there is so far removed from your daily experience that you think it's fundamentally different to shooting a deer for food. That piece of bacon you just ate was part of a living breathing pig, ditto for the chicken, beef, and fish that you eat without thinking twice. They suffered bloody deaths too.
I don't know much about hunting or hunting deer. The idea that it's done to control deer population has always sounded to me like a made-up reason to justify something that needs no justification other than it's a sport with a tasty reward.
