For the first 4 or 5 years after I bought my house, I had a company out of Portland come up and do the 12 large trees around the front of my house in white minilights and the roofline and gutters with red and green. (not climbing on my roof that's got areas that are over 40' from the ground).
Stopped doing that a few years back. Not that many others in the neighborhood were doing theirs and I found the money could be better spent elsewhere. We just do the inside now. Tree went up yesterday, but the decorating is a little bit here and a little bit there over the course of a few days.
