I don't understand the protests because at this point--the war is happening and they can't stop it, but if waiving around signs makes them happy--they have a right to do it ... but in my right to exercise free speech ----- I believe at this point it would be better to channel energies in a more positive manner instead of blocking streets, causing businesses to lose money which impacts the economy...blah, blah, blah

First of all, actions are not the same as speech. If I punch you in the face, that is not "free speech", simply because it isn't speech. Now, what he did was not saying "Hey, you are a fucking moron for waving that sign around!", but take an aggressive action. It's like when you don't agree with the president - you can tell him he's wrong, but you can't buldoze the white house. Got it?
Secondly, what you said about waving signs around when the war is already happening not making a difference - wake up and remember Vietnam.
