I think it comes down to exposure and susceptibility.
Think of it like drugs. Probably 30% of the population or more has a susceptibility to becoming addicted to drugs. The only thing stopping that is most people are not exposed to hard drugs so it's never an issue. As we've seen with heroin and meth in small towns, when a majority of people are exposed, the number of addicts and those who abuse skyrockets. All that is needed to trigger a problem is widespread exposure.
Now I'm not saying hardcore porn is like heroin, but clearly it can be abused and its effects can be destructive for those who abuse it. What we are seeing is everyone being exposed to the most hardcore/extreme/fetish porn ever made, being exposed at a very early age, and not having any context that there is anything wrong with it. The sites are free, they see real companies advertising on them, they are listed on Google in the top spots so there is no stigma at all. As an adult you can deal with it, but a 15 year old kid has no context to put all that stuff into perspective.
This has to be having an enormous effect on how young people are developing their attitudes towards sex, and not in a good way.
