Google has an open opportunity at the eBay market, but likely won't go after it ... and for good reason.

As Amazon and Yahoo both found out, running an "auction" site requires a lot advertising effort to build marketshare, and then on top of that doing fraud control and providing customer service ... all of which eats up much of the profit margin, and thus, in the U.S., they don't compete directly against eBay auctions.

i would like to see more specialty sites like Etsy.com come into the market. i think that anyone with any sense who was selling quality handmade goods on ebay has moved to etsy. the people who were making a killing on ebay selling vintage clothes will probably move at least part of their stock to etsy as well. unfortunately it doesn't cater to everyone selling used jewelry and electronics etc but it's still a nice site with way less hassle. i hope that other intentionally smaller, niche sites come to exist.
