I don't have any member sites but if I did, this would be how I would do it:
Sounds fair to "take away" the last bit of doubt the surfer might have. For example give the surfer a 60 seconds download clock in the member area to get an impression and then give a small pop-up "preview time expired, do you want you membership to start now; click yes or no to cancel". This might seem to scare people away at first but I think it will gain more trust to click the "yes" with utmost confidence by beeing honest to the surfer and prevent these expensive chargebacks at the same time as a side effect.

That's about the same strategy as a showing trailers & thumbs on a VOD site.
