You make a good point that Iran currently poses no threat to Europe. The missile defense system is primarily symbolic as an expression of US power in the region. But it would also be naive to assume the Iranians are standing still and are not developing a longer range ballistic missile along with their nuclear program. The Iranians have long stated their intention to have long range nuclear ballistic missile capability and they are doing everything they can to archive that as quickly as possible. Only the most naive apologist or a propagandist would try to suggest otherwise (which one are you Buzzy?).
At the same time it is perfectly understandable how an expression of US power in Poland would upset the Russians. Putin has no choice but to make some kind of symbolic response.
