Places like Cali can and should what?
Really does not help others thoughts of you, when you think California is anything like LA, San Diego, Orange County, and so forth.
Then if you decide to bring up San Fransisco which still leaves out a crap load of California. They are already pretty compact, have bike shares, cable cars, rapid transit, plenty of buses, and even all the taxi cabs most would ever need.
Leave middle California and head to northern CA, you will quickly find hundreds of miles of empty land, then mountains will appear on the horizon. Before you reach them you will find farms, orchards, rice fields, you name it. You are now in Northern CA which makes up large chunk of the state (also controls most of its water, etc.). Except in small cities and towns. You will typically find ranch sized lots (10-1000's of acres) with a house of less than 2,000 square feet-often two story. In towns though people are usually on small 1/4 acre chunks along the streets. With houses around 1200-2500 square feet.
You can hunt out some McMansions built during the boom. Subdivisions of them actually, many of which will soon be facing our foul weather patterns during winter. Then there are a few out of place ones in certain neighborhoods too. Just nothing like one would see or think about when dealing with southern CA.
As for mid west people sure they can have large amounts of acres. No care in the world. As long as they are not getting government welfare for not planting on that land, or even getting some checks from them to only grow certain stuff, sell at certain prices, whatever. Fuck that crap.
House size - sure they could make them big because you have the room. Not a valid reason at all though. People really should need the amount of house they live in. Tons of extra square footage just to have it is senseless. Raises upkeep, cost more to build it, creates more waste, and is way to ego based.
