Colbert plays a caricature. Pre-show he comes out and allows the audience to ask him questions before he has to portray the self-admittedly horrible character he plays on tv. I know a lot of republicans who actually love Colbert and even agree with him on most things. Stephen does not even allow his children to watch his show. Republicans even like him because, while he makes fun of and parodies everything they believe, he gets "it". He understands the religious right. He understands the right wing in general. Stephen takes his family, every sunday, to church. He teaches sunday school.
Colbert was raised in a very intellectual way. He was brought up and raised in a family where religion was a very important component. He was also raised to question things he believes and is told. If you've EVER seen him with a hardcore religious guest on his show, you've seen him quote scripture way more readily and way more accurately than even his guest(s) verbatim and off the cuff. That gives him incredible "cred" when dealing with those guests.
I'm gonna stop this rant here to prevent sounding too much like a fan-boy, but he's really an amazing guy. So is Jon Stewart. Jon is way more impartial and bitingly truthful than people give him credit for.
