Canada has 30 soldiers there

OTTAWA - A small number of Canadian troops may find themselves fighting in a war against Iraq, even if Canada decides not to participate.

The troops are on an exchange program with the U.S. and British military, and some of them are in the Arabian Gulf, where they could be involved in any conflict.

About 30 Canadian soldiers are currently in the Arabian Gulf region, serving with U.S. troops.

Most are in the air force and navy, but a few are in the army, and they are in units that could be part of a potential force against Iraq.

David Pratt, chair of the House of Commons defence committee, says this is not an unusual situation.

"I think it is well recognized around the globe that you do have these officers that are embedded with other forces for training purposes, especially among the NATO allies."

The Canadian government could decide to bring the troops back home, if the U.S. goes to war. But defence analyst David Rudd says that could have long-term consequences for the Canadian military.

Rudd says some of the troops are filling important jobs in the U.S. forces. Pulling them out, says Rudd, might not be wise.

"It says Canada is not a reliable ally. It also says that in a time of crisis and time of war we are prepared to leave our allies short-handed."

But NDP leader Jack Layton says if any potential war against Iraq happens without United Nations approval, no Canadians should be involved.

"It doesn't matter if it's 10 or 10,000, if war is illegal no Canadians should be there."

The Department of National Defence says it will review the situation if the U.S. goes it alone in a war against Iraq.
