Today, money is nothing but numbers.
I do my banking online. I check my accounts and pay bills electronically; numbers flow in from some people and flow out to others. It's no different than cut-n-paste from one spreadsheet field to another. Nothing of real value exchanges hands anymore, except (sometimes) massive gold transfers between nations.
Sure, "money" is a means by which goods and services can be "equalized" in value, but the "value" of currency today is no more than the faith that people put into it. In other words, money has value because you believe it does.
The U.S. Treasury states that "The motto IN GOD WE TRUST was placed on United States coins largely because of the increased religious sentiment existing during the Civil War."
But did you ever consider that U.S. currency says "In God We Trust" not because we as a nation are trying to force religious ideals on people, but because it is only God, and not the paper or coins that these words are printed on, that can be trusted?
It's not like they didn't warn you...
