I always try to encourage people to think like the rocket scientists that Google employs

So, what do they want? To deliver relevant results and to not to be screwed over by "clever" webmasters who discover tricks to alter those results.
So, they don't like seriously
duplicate content because it's trying to mess with their well thought out algorithm...Duplicate content may be used to create tons and tons of "keyword rich" pages on one site, or to create lots of sites with the same "keyword rich" pages.
So, a duplicate paragraph to help your surfers out is hardly trying to screw Google over, but instead increasing the "usability" of your site!
