I try to eat balanced. I'm not a calorie counter. When it comes to unhealthy foods, it's not so much what you eat, but how much of it you eat. Every 2 weeks or so I buy lots of goodies - cookies, chocolate bars, chips - and scarf them down. If you're active, your body is going to burn that stuff off anyway.

If the majority of your diet consists of vegetables, fruits, white meat (fish, chicken), low fat stuff like skim milk and zero fat yogurts, I think you're good to go. I eat toast and bagels regularily - I'm never cutting out bread. I also eat spaghetti all the time but I use extra lean ground beef and I drain out as much fat as possible once it's cooked before putting it on the spaghetti. I don't drink soda or coffee. Just water, milk, and some fruit juices like applejuice or orange juice from time to time.

I imagine getting sick less has as much to do with the foods you eat as with where you get it from. All those people handling food in enclosed areas around old equipment with tons of customers around in fast food resaurants is probably the perfect breeding ground for spreading illnesses.
