Yeah it is pretty hardcore... before I had the first procedure done I was scared as shit thinking about needles and eyeballs and who knows if I'd feel it? Really the recovery is the hardest part... the surgery itself is really just a matter of going in and coming out.
The weird thing about when I had it done with local anesthesia before, the doctor said I was complaining of discomfort during the surgery. I couldn't remember a damn thing from the procedure. I was like "WTF... I hope I didn't say anything totally fucked up to her while she was working!" She claims nothing terrible was said. But I can only imagine that if I was in enough pain, and fucked up on their medication, I'd probably let a few words slip that would not have benefitted the surgery. LOL
