1. some sponsors seem to be awol especially alot of small ccbill sites, but if you aren't getting the attention you want then like others said here, move on
2. it is said that google never penalizes for links in, but it is also thought that directories and linkfarms have no link weight behind them either (in other words, google is likely to ignore most directory links), so it wouldn't be something to invest alot of time into
