stepping in front of tanks, bulldozers, etc is a long established and last gasp method of protest which requires tremendous courage. It's a way to either stop an action or expose the true ethics of a given regime. Even China refused to run over a protester with a tank in Tiannenmen square.

I believe the jews deserved a homeland and a place of refuge. However, artificially created nation-states almost never hold. It's a tough situation for them.
