Everyone laughs at that but that's part of the reason everything costs more. All of you need diesel fuel in one way or another and you all pay for it.

Many factors.
1. One is that in 2006 the US and Europe adopted
ultra low sulfur diesel standards. This has increased the refining cost for diesel.
2. Another is taxes. The Federal tax on diesel is 6 cents higher on diesel than regular gas. Different states
tax diesel differently so you might see even wider numbers than here in different states. example: california's diesel taxes are 8 cents higher than on regular gasoline.
3. Worldwide diesel demand has been increasing at a pretty good clip.
