FARMINGDALE, N.Y. - An FBI team trying to find the remains of a Colombo crime family underboss used hatchets, axes, rakes and shovels to dig deep into a wooded area of Long Island.

The search, which was suspended Wednesday at sundown, was to continue Thursday as FBI agents followed tips provided by a new informant about the remains of gangland murder victims _ including alleged Colombo mobster William "Wild Bill" Cutolo.

More than 50 FBI agents, aided by Suffolk County police, combed the woods near Route 110 and Del Drive in Farmingdale. A medical examiner's truck was also at the scene, according to the New York Post.

For now, the Colombo capo's resting place is symbolically marked by a tombstone and an empty coffin buried on Staten Island.

Cutolo disappeared in May 1999. Federal law enforcement authorities have long believed he was killed to stop him from taking control of the Colombo crime family from Carmine "The Snake" Persico and his son, Alphonse "Allie Boy" Persico.

The younger Persico was convicted of Cutolo's murder last year.
