Yea raw mpeg at 5000 kbps is worse than DVD quality, which as far as I know is 8000 kbps mpeg 2 but for example 5000 kbps WMV, VP6 or h.264 encoded from a great source should be great and better than DVD quality. I've never produced content myself so I don't know as much as you but I do know the basics and enough for me to decide what kind of content would serve me best.
Streaming at for example 6 mbps is fine for the 8+ mbps adsl users and there's a lot of them even though they aren't even nearly a majority. Nevertheless such files are mainly for download and having the ability to stream them will only mean more in the future.
Also I guess if you have that kind of material you can also have a lot better converting free samples as the "download highest quality sample" option beside the more standard kbps streaming sample.
Besides, I want high quality videos also for the reason that my standard kbps versions would look better as well.
