I'm an independent too.
My take. I don't think McCain and his team is intentionally doing bad right now. All campaigns go through ups and downs. It was just a few weeks ago that the majority opinion in the media (and public polls) was that Obama was tired, that people were tired of Obama and that he was making mistakes and that McCain had seized the initiative. Just a few weeks later and it looks like the reverse.
The battleground keeps changing. McCain's team had just found something that was starting to work and then focus switched to the economy where Obama has a clear advantage with voters.
One thing that makes an election so unpredictable is the outside events. What happens if the economy recovers? What if it gets worse? What if there is a terrorist attack on US soil? What if there is one in London? These outside events play a huge role in voter perceptions. 9/11 gave us a George Bush with a 90% approval rating. HUH?
Obama's poll average right now is about 3% which is pretty much what it has been since he beat Hillary. Battleground states to determine. RCP currently has Obama 273. McCain 265.
