What McCain has to gain is making Obama look like he isn't serious and only cares about winning. Since bringing Palin on board McCain can't use the inexperience card on Obama so he has resorted to trying to make him look like an elitist that can't connect with common people. This is a chance to make Obama look like he cares more about being president than about helping people out.
I think it won't help McCain though. I think eventually some kind of bailout will be made and most people will blame the republicans for this having to happen and McCain will have to endure that as he continues.
