Yep, it's a nice idea to just accept death and be happy with it, but you are exactly right I think in saying for the individual facing it, it isn't so easy. In the end the struggle of it all, and the illness itself may suck him of all his energy and have him accept his own fate, but for now, and with friends at his side I think you should help him fight and see some kind of hope.
I really can't imagine going skydiving, partying with friends, or whatever "living to the full" (entails) is really going to make him happier about his situation, if anything I think it would make it harder for him to accept and be ok with the thought of dying. Unfortunately I don't know much about cancer treatment to add there, but don't give up.
