Yes and no.
Facial burns would be consistent with HV from the inverter, however the burn process would have taken a while (with the inverter still functioning). Taking that into consideration along with the poor conductivity of human skin / flesh, I think it is still quite plausible.
The backlight probably wouldn't have illuminated whilst the guy's head was a part of the circuit, but afterwards it may well have flicked back on.
I'm talking about an LCD monitor incidently, a CRT would be many times worse in a similar occurence.
