SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A teen mother will face murder and child abuse charges for the death of her 11-month-old son.
In documents filed in 3rd Distinct Court Friday, Utah's chief medical examiner Dr. Todd Grey says an autopsy found the child died from a spinal fracture. Grey said the injury was likely the result of severe, painful bending. The autopsy also showed signs of an older, similar back injury and a rib fracture.
The boy died Aug. 24 at Primary Children's Medical Center.
Mother Adrianna Lucero, 17, told police she called 911 after her son's eyes rolled back, he collapsed and stopped breathing suddenly. She also said the child had suffered seizures.
Prosecutors charged Lucero with one first-degree felony count of murder and two second-degree felony counts of child abuse.
Lucero's 26-year-old boyfriend was also charged with one second-degree felony county of obstruction of justice for initially having lied to police.
