Right now, the court is split down the middle. But the next few years will probably bring some openings (particularly John Paul Steven's seat, since he is already 88 yrs old).

Packing the Court with more right-wingers will have damaging effects on civil liberties for many years to come. This should be of special concern for people who value their First Amendment rights, since the courts are usually where those rights get protected.

I don't even want to think about who John McCain (or even worse, Sarah Palin) would appoint.
Why do people on this board think that the Democrats are all about protecting your rights and the Republicans always want to take them away.

Interesting poll numbers show that well 82% of voters who support McCain believe the justices should rule on what is in the Constitution, just 29% of Barack Obama’s supporters agree.

Lets see it's 5-4 republican at the moment Roberts, Alito, Thomas, Kennedy, and Scalia are right. Stephens, Breyer, Souter, and Ginsburg are left.

As Kennedy votes so does the Court. Almost all decisions are 5-4 with Kennedy breaking the 4-4 tie. His role is very pronounced and he never strays too far left and never too far right; much like O'Connor.

Interestingly there location relative to center is totally unrelated to who appointed them. Either Souter or Breyer were GHWBs appointee and they consistently vote left. Stephens was a Ford appointee and he's off the charts to the left.
