It is a micro blogging service. You post links, thoughts, ideas, jokes, etc no longer than 140 characters.
The real point of it is who you follow though. And what you can get from that. So, digg.com founder Kevin Rose now has over 55k followers. It is a broadcast medium.
The only similarity with facebook is the facebook status. It's kinda like that, but in an RSS feed. You can update your twitter via SMS or the web, or standalone twitter client like twitterific. You can respond directly to other people's messages or send them direct PMs.
There are quite a few porn related people on it already. I've not seen it used by any stars yet, and I think that would be interesting.
It's still in the realm of the geek for now, but when some major celeb starts using it I can see it tipping over into the mainstream.
