Because usually by the time divorce rolls around, the two hate each other so much that they decide it's important to fight over every single solitary little thing. This includes car payments, dog visitation, throw pillows, glasses, a spoon, etc. Divorces can be over in a matter of days if the two people agree that it's over, and who leaves with what and who gets paid what. Long divorces become a battle of the wills and who can hurt the other one the most. Unfortunately, if kids are involved, that's who gets hurt the most
I'm at the age were I've been through it as have tons of my friends and rarely does anyone act like an adult.
