Enfield, Nova Scotia (AHN) - Jazz Airlines, the regional airline of Air Canada, announced Sunday that it is removing inflatable life vests in its Dash-8 aircraft to reduce weight and save fuel.
Canadian Press reported that Transport Canada allows airlines to use flotation devices instead of life vests as long as planes remain within 90 kilometers (56 miles) off the shore.
Jazz has adjusted its East Coast routes to comply with the 90-kilometer limit. Jazz passengers are now advised to use seat cushions as flotation devices.
A life vest weighs about half a kilogram (1.1 pounds). About 25 kilograms (55.1 pounds) would be saved by removing them from a 50-seater airplane.
Halifax MP Peter Stoffer says dropping life vests from Jazz flights is "asinine," adding that the regional carrier has "gone cost-saving overboard," reported the Chronicle Herald.
