I've known a fair amount of people that just skipped out on it and nothing happened. I was out of town for a month or two and found out I was suppose to go (letter). I believe the back of the letter says something along the lines of don't worry about if you're out of town, sick etc etc. It's probably different depending on where you live though. But I've been pulled over years after that and nothing happened.
