You might consider removing it from your machine; higher ambient heat won't help if it's already having issues.
Get
one of these, or comparable. Stick the HD in a fairly airtight baggy, then put it into your freezer overnight.
Take it out, hook it up to the external USB adaptor, and copy every damn thing you can off of it. while trying to keep it cooled.
