Biden can do a few things for Obama. As was mentioned he can tear into McCain. He has always been someone that says that he thinks so he will make a very good attack dog. That is what the VP is during the election. He attacks the other candidate while the presidential guy stays out and above it. Biden will be pretty damn good at this. He also has a lot of foreign policy experience and can help there and is from blue collar roots and has a good record of getting blue collar voters on his side, something Obama seems to lack.
His downside is that he may say too much and he might come off like an asshole. Others will say that Obama can't run on the change platform while aligning himself with people that have spent the last 30 years in the senate.
Of the available choices I don't know that he is the best but if they keep him in check he should be pretty good. I thought he would take Evan Bayh would have been the guy if for no other reason than he could help Obama win Indiana which is typically a republican stronghold state, but is in play this year.
