Divide and conquer. Windows Mobile isn't a frontrunner in radical innovation. Therefore, most phones with Windows Mobile don't appeal to gadget-lovers as much as Apple does.

The GPhone, like the iPhone, will be getting initial market share among the gadget-lovers. Relatively speaking, it will take away more market share from Apple than it will from MS. This will impede Apple's ability to expand its popularity from early adopters to the market as a whole.

Moreover, considering the halo effect of the iPhone, Google taking market share away from Apple on the mobile market will lower the market share Apple is currently taking away from Microsoft on the desktop and laptop markets.

Of course, the bad part of the situation, for MS, is that integration of the GPhone with Google's online services will probably make it even harder for MS to gain market share in the online market.

Still, having two of your main competitors fight to be the biggest innovator in a market where innovation wasn't your selling point to begin with isn't all that bad.
