I think its you who is nuts with a comparison like that, you could sit in a sauna all day and burn more calories than a long run, your body will be fucked after the long run though and the next day you will still be sore, after the big intensive calorie burning sauna session your body will be normal.
Swimming is low impact and very kind to your muscles and joints, that is why swimmers can compete at the top level 6 days in a row. Try getting other athletes in other sports to do that, they physcially will not be able to.
