You know what doesnt change that much? The guys who make good money off the engines, I see the same few guys dominating many terms much like they did 5 years ago when I started. Everything changes but quality will always remain top and dominate the laws of averages.

you mean like the tube sites and the rapidshare forums?
how else are true legit organic backlinks obtained these days? guys that have big networks of sites spread across ips or sites that have been around a long time and have old steady backlinks from years of trading, and then can use those to prop up their new projects/networks/manual link trades?.... the average internet surfer is not organically putting up backlinks to tgps or blogs, the only "hardworking quality sites" that are getting backlinks the way google 'wants/intends' for backlinks to be earned are pretty much the sites that are giving away all kinds of stolen content
the way I see it, "quality" as you speak of really means 'stolen content', and the other way is by glorified spamming (ie. backlinks through connections or their own networks)... there is no honest "content is king" in this business
