Gallery submitting is profitable only for a very few ppl, because of reasons already listed in this thread. The pie example is not true anymore imo: submitters need to compete with FHGs and 95% of submitters fail this battle and give up or start cheating (and leave industry a little later) making it harder for the True Submitters who make serious efforts to have good results and reputation.

Nowadays, with most TGP/MGPs losing their traffic to tube sites, I would guess the majority of people buying spots and submitting galleries are Affiliate Programs and their inhouse employees. There are definitely some old school webmasters doing their best to make a living at submitting galleries, but times have changed. Paid passes is a cause for flaming each other on every adult board. My opinion is that its not a problem if I have to pay for a pass as far as its not "overvaluated:. For example a PinkWorld pass costs $59. You submit 30 galleries, ~20 will be accepted, you make 4 sales at least, its OK. But most of the paid passes are impossible to make a good ROI. I don't know what was 6-7 years ago, but I've heard a lot legends and its sure it was lot easier then.
About tube vs TGP/MGP: for MGPs the age of tube sites can result in a huge loss. For TGPs and picture galleries its not like that imo. I prefer making picture galleries, I have several reasons:
- easier to make a nice unique gallery: much more variations, layouts, its up to your fantasy
- if a surfer gets horny looking at your picture gallery and sees that besides the HQ pics the site is offering HD videos, he is willing to pay to watch the scene made him so horny on video as well.
- I experience no big difference between the conversion of a movie and a picture gallery, but movie gallery burns much more bandwidth so will cost you more.
As an enthusiastic amateur I am still learning a lot every single day because even if I am happy with my results I do know that I know shit about the whole adult biz, so there's a long way and several months/years until I can say I understand this industry very well.
