You could also argue than building an army would be an actual investment in the future since all the commcercials / recruitment for joining the army state they build leaders, higher integrity and educate people in general. So wouldn't it be better for europe it was done within europe ?
I never followed various news about armies and such so can't really comment on it, for many europeans the army is not considered a highly important subject to discuss.
If I am not mistaken Denmark did send at least 200-300 soldiers an possible a plane or a helicoptor to help in Iraq
